FELINE FIXATHON 2008 - HALF OFF Spay/Neuter

During the month of March, in cooperation with Spay Day USA, The Pulaski County Humane Society is hosting its 4th annual Feline Fixathon. 1/2 OFF spay or neuter surgeries can be booked at participating veterinarian offices located in the Pulaski County area.

Don't procrastinate while the felines procreate.

The ideal time to fix a cat is when they start getting the lanky "teenager legs" between kitten and adulthood but some vets early fix as early as 8 weeks of age. There are health benefits to fixing a female cat prior to her first heat (which is typically at 6 months of age - but can happen even earlier). A female cat in heat will yowl and a male cat will seek out the females, spraying and marking. A female cat can get pregnant every 9 weeks and even while nursing a litter. Cats start mating the second the weather starts to be the least bit warm, which means RIGHT NOW. Our shelter is full 12 months of the year, 24X7 with cats - we don't need more births - ever - and there are never enough homes for all of them.

Several Big Beautiful Felines have been waiting ever so patiently for someone who doesn't mind a little extra baggage. These gorgeous gals have everything you could want in a feline friend - beautiful coats, playfulness, catatude and so much more!

Visit our website and look for our featured felines, marked with a "fuzzy heart". Drop by the Pulaski County Animal Shelter and Humane Education Center to check out these delightful damsels and find out just how much love can be packed into one furry fabulous friend!

LAKE PARTY 2007

The PCHS had it's annual volunteer LAKE PARTY and Laura and Jeff's place on the lake.

Brave souls being drug around by Bill. It was a ton of fun actually. Don't have any photos of the 3 seater tube - but it was a truly WILD RIDE.

The biggest wipe out award goes to Anthony - it was a GOOD ONE. Too bad his injury was a pre-party "carry the casserole" to the car injury and not a REAL lake injury ----

We ate, drank some colada's, and just kicked back w/the huskies.

Hello all! I haven't posted in quite some time, so I wanted to give a shout out to all my homies. Um......good evening, homies (I'm not very good at this shout out thing). I wish I could have seen more of you at Laura's house this past Sunday. Anita and I got to be in the boat parade, which was loads of fun. There was a brief moment of excitement when one of the boats sank, sending woman and dog asunder (sounds way more dramatic than it actually was), and the sinking boat (which was a small dinghy being pulled by a jet ski) won the "Most Team Spirit" award for their Hokie pride.

We picked up Nicole mid-parade after Laura, who was piloting, sped back to her dock to drop off Anita and Kayla, who had to go to work. I have seen Laura take off at top speed in the Expedition at least twice to chase after run away dogs; I don't know why it didn't occur to me that she can and will do the same in a boat!

Anita and I had already cleaned the cat condo that morning, and after the parade, we both had to run home to clean our own "condos." But I came back with Billy and Anita brought Chuck for the cookout and fireworks, and Nicole was still there (and was much less tan than I would have expected!). Anita's little nephew (Anita calls him Oopers; I can't remember his real name!) was also in town--I'm sure he wasn't expecting to be in a parade and see fireworks while he was here! I think Susan may have been watching from her boat. Evan and Ethan and a few others sent up the fireworks at dark--I would dare say some medium sized municipalities would be envious of the pyrotechnics display that night! Good job guys! And thanks to Laura and Jeff--great friends who are always willing to share home, hearth, and mixed drinks!

I hope everyone can make it this coming Sunday. If it helps to encourage everyone, I am bringing chocolate pie! I would love to see everyone. This whole employment thing has seriously cut into my shelter time, but we all know that where there are abused children, there are abused animals, so I get to intervene in both! I have already re-homed a soon-to-be-homeless cat and an abused dog, made a new friend at a new rescue, and handed out a ton of spay/neuter info from Margaret B. Mitchell clinic and Smyth County Humane Society. It never ends, but we keep plugging away. Which is why we all need to chill out at Laura's this weekend!

McGuire's Fiddlefest 2007

This past Saturday the McGuire's hosted the first annual fiddlefest to benefit our animals. It was a great success, raising nearly $5,000.00! WOW. Many, many thanks to the McGuire family for working tirelessly to help the animals.

Many volunteers donated countless hours - I especially thank Laura our President, Cris our Events Coordinator, and Susan our talented Baker.

Many thanks to EACH OF YOU that baked items, sold raffle tickets, face painted, sold hot dogs and raffle tickets, and volunteered at our booth the day of the event. It was a FUN DAY!

The raffle was very successful. At least 50 items were raffled off - one of the biggest raffles around. I recognized many of the winning names and was happy to see so many people win great prizes. We also thank those that donated items for the raffle.

Assisi Van- May1st Canceled

Well we don't have enough animals for the van this tuesday and the next scheduled van is May 15th. I will be contacting pet owners tomorrow to advise them of the reschedule. I will also be calling the Assisi Van folks to advise them of the cancelation. I will notify the spay van volunteers. At this point I only have 12 animals booked for May 15th. So lets book spread the word about the Assisi van providing spay and neutering services.

Doggone Bluegrass Season

The McGuire's Campground's First Annual Doggone Bluegrass Show benefiting the Pulaski County Humane Society

is scheduled for May 12th from 11:00 to 5:00 and the big day is just a month away! We are very excited and very much appreciate the hard work and effort of Mike and Sherry McGuire in coordinating and this awesome event!

Sherry will be stirring up some of her good Shamrock Cafe' cookin' with hotdogs and the fixin's while Mike and the boy's are mashin' it on the strings with live music throughout the day. You might even catch Laura Walters throwing down a little flat footin' on the stage.

We are going have lots of great music, fun activities, craft vendors, and awesome raffle prizes.

This is a great opportunity to publicize your business while making a tax deductible donation towards supporting homeless pets in Pulaski County.

We have numerous duties (walking shelter pets, tickets, food, bake sale and raffle, set up/clean up, parking) and need your help. Contact me if you or your group would like to help.

Shannon Charlton Memorial Bowlathon

Yesterday, nearly 50 bowlers (and many supporters) participated at the 3rd annual Shannon Charlton Memorial Bowlathon at Leisure Lanes in Pulaski. PCHS bowlers Nicole, Billy, and Rita bowled some of the best games of their lives but proved to be little competition for the other contenders.












A 50/50 raffle was held, which was won by our friend Angie, despite the inordinate number of tickets purchased by Nicole!









Bud and Brenda fixed up beautiful cat and dog goodie bags for the bowlers' pets--many animals went to sleep last night with tummies full of treats and exhausted from playing with new toys!
