Please repost! These dogs’ lives depend on it!

The following dogs are under the care of Pulaski County Animal Control and were scheduled to be killed on 06/04/10, due to lack of space. Fortunately, several of these wonderful dogs were adopted or placed in foster care; however, others are still in danger! For each dog that was adopted or placed, 3 more came in to the shelter! Pulaski County Animal Control is at capacity! This is the sad reality of people's failure to spay/neuter their pets and properly care for them!

I would like to remind everyone that calling animal control to hassle them about the job they are forced to do is a waste of everyone’s time. You’re anger is misdirected and should be aimed at the idiots who allow their animals to reproduce like the Duggars and fail to provide proper care for them. You might also want to aim some of that at your state reps who are failing to enact spay/neuter and puppy mill laws.

Please help severely abused, sweet pit bull girl!

Please re-post—this dog’s life depends on it!

Sweet Nellie was picked up by Pulaski County Animal Control as a stray. It was immediately discovered that she is a very sweet dog that has been severely abused. She was taken to the local vet for treatment, where it was discovered that she was covered with lacerations and puncture wounds, none of which appear to be consistent with wounds made by another animal.

Nellie has numerous abscesses on her front limbs, which are extremely swollen. She has a large wound inside her mouth, large X-shaped cuts on the top of her head, and large puncture wounds on her shoulders, ribs, and abdomen. We have been hard pressed to identify the type of instruments used to torture this timid, loving dog. She even has what inexplicably appears to be a human bite mark on her shoulder.

Staff at the vet’s office said Nellie was very docile and patient during her initial treatment, including shaving and scrubbing her wounds, which must have been excruciatingly painful. As yet another testament to her wonderful personality, Nellie was afraid to walk past a cat kennel to go outside because the cat meowed at her.

If dogs could talk, Nellie would have a heartbreaking tale to tell, but right now, her new friends at Pulaski County Animal Control and Pulaski County Humane Society must speak for her. Nellie is currently being treated for pain and infection, but extensive follow up vet care will be needed to treat the abscesses and other wounds. Birthday girl helps shelter pets!

Instead of receiving birthday gifts, birthday girl Sydni asked her friends to collect supplies for the Pulaski County Animal Shelter. What a generous and unselfish act!

Toys, food, treats, and supplies were some of the gifts presented to the animals. Some of the cat and dog food will be repackaged and donated to needy pets in our community, a program we recently started to assist people in the community who have fallen on tough economic times.

Sydni is pictured with one of the many darling kittens awaiting a home at the shelter.

PCHS would like to extend a sincere and grateful "THANK YOU" to all the students, teachers, parents and staff who so generously donated to "Paws for the Cause." You see, last week we received an email from Belle Heth Elementary School in nearby Radford City that a donation drive had been in effect during the weeks prior to and asked if we would accept the donated gifts to use in our shelter. Would we ever! Shocked and astounded would be the best words to describe our reactions as we, of course, gratefully accepted the offerings! Kudos especially to all the younger supporters who eagerly gave to the cause without so much as a "paws," err...pause!

PCHS is thankful to have such amazing support which has extended past Pulaski's county lines. What an outpouring of generosity we received. The homeless animals of this county truly thank you with all that they have and we now believe that what they say is true, "love knows no boundaries."

First transport with North Shore Animal League

Eleven PCHS pups were fortunate enough to make the trip of a lifetime to Port Washington, NY to North Shore Animal League's no-kill shelter. It took a team of volunteers to make this happen! Rebecca coordinated, as is her speciality, and thank goodness for that! I couldn't coordinate my way out of a paper bag with holes in both ends. Shelter manager Julie scored us a county van, and Anthony, a.k.a. Mr. Fix-It, scrubbed and assembled the stainless steel cages inside (I just realized that Mr. Fix-It is married to Mrs. Fix-It, but they do 2 very different kinds of fixin'!). Vet checks on Sunday included a team of me, Rebecca, Jane, Kim, vet and son (not sure if she wants her name mentioned).

The van loaded early this morning--4:30 AM! But loyal van loaders Barb, Jane, and Lynn (well, I guess me, too) were on scene and we got through it very smoothly and quickly! As the only "county approved driver," I took the wheel at about 5 AM, with Lynn happily by my side to make sure I stayed awake for the drive to Roanoke. I'd like to add that Lynn was hoping for school to be in session today--so she could go to work! What amazing energy!

The drive ended in Roanoke for me and Lynn, but not for the pups! They were loaded into another van--driven by expert transporter Diane--for the second leg of the journey to Harrisonburg. We got to see fellow rescuer Ruthie from Wytheville (who was transporting 31 puppies by herself--go Ruthie!), and met a new friend, Elizabeth, who is also an expert transporter. In Harrisonburg, the pups were loaded onto North Shore's transport RV for the rest of the long haul.

Lynn and I got back to the shelter just as the Asissi shuttle was arriving, and Rebecca was on scene (solo, I might add) to check everyone in. I heard that Julie cleaned the van, but I'm sure (at least I hope) she had some help from Jonathan and the trustees. Special thanks to Julie for getting us the van!

So many puppies were saved today, but we still have lots of squirming cuties at the shelter available for adoption! Please come visit us to see our many animals (including 3 hamsters) in need of loving homes!

Ariel Want for Christmas

Shhhhhh! Please don't tell Ariel that Christmas is over and 2009 has arrived. You see, Ariel is one of our longest running residents of the PCHS Cat Condo. Although she has gladly accepted her throne as "Queen, " what she was really hoping for was that one nice family who she could finally call her own. Although all of us here love her spunky personality with all of our hearts, we all wish for that right person or persons to come along and see just how hilarious and endearing this sweet little feline is.

So it has been decided by Queen Ariel that she will refuse to accept the fact that Christmas is over and has longterm plans to stick it out under the Christmas tree until Santa brings her the forever family she asked for. She even told me that she HAD to be on the "Nice" list, considering all the dog slobber she's endured over the course of 2008. Sometimes, if you even listen closely when you walk by her current abode in the Education Room, you can even hear her humming her favorite tune "Ariel Want for Christmas" (sung of course, to the tune of "All I want for Christmas"). I believe the lyrics go something like this:

Ariel want for Christmas is a nice new home

For me to roam,

And call my own

Ariel want for Christmas is a nice warm home

You see, I would surely love it!

Poor Ariel-- we don't want her wasting away to nothing under a dried up Christmas tree-- so please open your hearts and consider our gorgeous little girlie as the perfect addition for your own home. It would make her year....and her life!

2008--Year in review--Top 10 Style!

I admit it--I'm lazy, so the idea of information presented in list fashion is very appealing to me. Even more appealing is information already compiled by someone else, thereby making it easier for me to present to you. Check these out:

The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center has compiled a list of the Top 10 Pet Poisons of 2008. Very informative and worth reading if you have animals in your home.

The PETA Files blog compiled a Top 10 list of their favorite Top 10 lists of the year, including the Top 10 Most Karmic Moments for Animal Abusers in 2008 (a wonderfully ironic list of animal abusers "getting theirs") and the Top 10 Most Overbred Dogs (a list of dogs that we see constantly at the shelter and their resulting genetic health problems). Like learning stuff? Read all 10 lists.

HSUS President Wayne Pacelle compiled a list of his 10 most popular blogs of 2008. I'm happy to see that his blog on Oprah's show about the horrors of puppy mills was in the Top 10--whether or not you like Oprah, she gets though to people, and puppy mill horror is a message that definitely needs to get through!

The Food Bowl blog listed the Top 10 Dog and Cat names of 2008. We have several animals by those names currently residing at the shelter, so here's hoping for some more creative names in 2009!

And speaking of 2009, here's to having fun with your pets in the coming year! PetVR.com went the easy route and compiled a bunch of lists (kudos to them!). Some are just for fun, such as Top10 Gassiest Dogs (surprisingly to me, Pit Bulls didn't make the list). Some are quite informative, such as Top 5 Pet Friendly National Parks--a list that is important to folks like me who like to take their dogs everywhere.

Christmas comes early in the form of Girl Scout Troop 2008

On Saturday, December 20th, the Pulaski County Humane Society was presented with $250.00 by what seemed like an ocean of bright-pink shirted girl scouts from troop 2008. According to Girl Scout leaders Serena Bennett and Tammy Akers, the 25 girls in troop 2008 did everything from searching under couch cushions for loose change to donating their allowance to asking for funds to donate to the Pulaski County Animal Shelter and Humane Education Center. These young ladies’ hard work certainly paid off. The girls also took advantage of having the shelter to themselves for a few hours and made sure to hug and pet as many cats, dogs, kittens and puppies as they could get their hands on. A large, sincere “thank you” to all the girls and leaders in Girl Scout Troop 2008-a job well done!

Volunteer Appreciation Picnic

This past Saturday, I had the honor of attending the annual Volunteer Appreciation Picnic. It was great to see all the people that I usually only communicate with by email. I realized too that despite the great turnout, there were still a ton of folks who could not make it! I don't think we could all fit under that gazebo!

Our president, Bill Bryant, along with our other grilling gurus, made sure we had plenty to eat. Everyone brought such delicious food--I made sure to try a little of everything, and thankfully no one got a picture of me stuffing my face, as has been done several times in the past! (BTW--I want to apologize to everyone for the whipped cream--I didn't realize it came straight from the store like that! And if you don't know what I'm talking about, believe me--you don't want to know!)

Volunteers of all breeds and sizes came out to enjoy the festivities, from labs to cockers, from the tall to the small.

Brenda brought a beautiful scrapbook of the memorial garden that her daughter, Sandy, made. If you haven't been to the shelter to see the garden, you are missing out! It's so beautiful and serene.

It couldn't have been a more perfect day! The weather was beautiful, great food, great friends, and the chance to let them all know how much they are appreciated for all that they do, and the largest concentration of good karma I've ever had to fortune to witness!

An organization-wide hug and one enormous THANK YOU is in order to one of our faithful and tireless volunteers, Bill (Billy) Bryant Jr, for all of his hard work and dedication.

Just a few days ago, Billy came in to present PCHS with a check for $250.00 from Wal-Mart Foundation. You see, Billy submits his volunteer hours to Wal-Mart, his employer and they in turn, have a program which donates back to charities of the employee's choice for the number of hours given through volunteering. Billy has been one of our most faithful and longstanding volunteers and we are extremely appreciative of all of his hard work and never-ending love and devotion towards the homeless animals of this county.

Are you prepared?

September is National Preparedness Month, just in time for Hurricane Gustav's arrival in the still devastated Gulf Coast. We are fortunate to live in an area where we are not marauded annually by storms, avalanches, earthquakes and such (knock wood or the sustainable crop of your choice), but that does not mean we will never be affected by disaster. Are you prepared?

Consider the possibilities. An interstate and other major roads run through our county, so Hazmat spills are a potential danger. The Radford Arsenal could be under threat by, for lack of a better word, terrorists. Forest fires could easily cause the evacuation of large numbers of people. How would you take care of yourself and your animals in a disaster?

Do you have a disaster kit? Do you have at least a 3 day supply of food and drinking water for each member of your household, including your pets? Do you have a radio and flashlight with extra batteries? Do you have kennels for all your pets? Do you have copies of important paperwork, such as insurance policies and rabies certificates, in waterproof containers? Do you have a plan? Do you practice that plan? How would you charge your iPod?

Sheesh. I know I don't have all that stuff, and I was there to witness first hand what poor planning and ill preparedness can lead to. You'd think I'd have better sense. I am not prepared, or at least, I'm not well prepared.

I don't have a written plan, but I do have a plan. I have a lot of useful camping gear stored in totes. I buy pet food in huge quantities and have huge pet/human first aid kit stored near the pet food. I have 3000 feet of restaurant grade plastic wrap. The disaster kit is coming together nicely.

I sincerely hope that everyone will take a few minutes of net surfing time to learn more about how to be prepared in a disaster. Check out the DHS and Citizens Corp National Preparedness Month page and the HSUS Disaster Preparedness for Pets page for more information.

Young Radford City Resident Lends a Helping Hand

It seems that generosity is a trait that must be catching amongst youth in the New River Valley. Just a few weeks ago, a blog was posted about Carly, a youngster who asked for donations for our shelter in lieu of birthday presents at her birthday party. Now it is Charlotte's turn to have her moment in the Limelight.

Ten-year-old Charlotte, who is a Radford City resident, came to visit the animals at our shelter last week and to donate three whole weeks of allowance she had saved up which she receives for doing household chores. For those of us who can look back fondly to our days of being ten, it is easy to remember just how hard it was to wait for ONE week for allowance, let alone saving up for THREE!

So THANK YOU, Charlotte, for being so generous and for being an inspiration to others in the NRV, regardless of age!

Its never too early to teach your child about the importance of giving back and helping those less fortunate. However in the case of the Porter family, it seems that no one had to teach their daughter this lesson at all.

You see, daughter Carly decided that instead of her friends bringing presents for her to her 9th birthday party at Claytor Lake, she wanted presents to take to all the homeless animals here at the Pulaski County Animal Shelter and Humane Education Center. As if this wasn't selfless enough, it turns out this is the SECOND time Carly has opted for presents for her furry friends instead of for herself. So WAY TO GO, Carly! It was easy to tell by all of the ear-to-ear grins (both feline and canine) that all the presents really raised the spirits of all of the homeless shelter animals.

FUN AND FROLIC AT PETSMART

Christiansburg PetSmart was rockin' and rollin' today with new Condo Pulaski residents and some visitors from the Pulaski Shelter Kennel Spa. Monty, the gorgeous lots-o'-dots Aussie mix and Gretchen, the sleek svelte Basenji mix spent hours and hours tumbling, wrestling and chewing on each other, entertaining volunteers and shoppers alike. Several times Gretchen was caught gnawing on Monty's cheek while he patiently waited for her to finish. The two Walker pups Thelma and Louise serenaded, bounced and pounced, using each other as pillows during resting periods. Josie spent the day cuddling with whoever happened to have a handy lap. The Kennel Spa kids throughly enjoyed their outing and attracted lots of attention.

Sara, one of the Maiden Voyage Group, went to her forever home today, thrilled with how she so thoroughly had her new owners enthralled. Silent Screen Star and Jet Pack Kali took her place. Four kittens also moved in, sparkling eyes eliciting many oohs and ahhs from vistors. Two left within hours, anxious to meet their new families.

Meantime, back at Condo Pulaski, Missy continues to sing her siren song to JD, who is beginning to weaken in his curmudgeonly vows. After sneaking a peek around the room to make sure no one was watching he actually gave Missy a quick slurp on the ear. Prince and Ariel have decided to remain just friends for now, taking it slow and hanging around together at Under the Condo Bar and Grill.

Tigger has been reunited with his brothers Lucky and Oliver, and the three tabbies are loving slinking, sliding and having races up the staircase and through the Condo Lane Tunnel. So far, Lucky is in the lead, but Tigger is demanding a review of the racing footage, claiming Oliver illegally hogged the inside track and forced Tigger into the outside lane and up against the wall, drifting him behind Lucky on the third lap.

New residents are on the waiting list and should be moving into Condo Pulaski sometime this week. Things promise to get interesting when these three saunter into the neighborhood!

Well, Chatty Catty was so excited Friday night she almost didn't make it to the litterbox! Four friends from Condo Pulaski have traveled to Christiansburg PetSmart to model their wonderful personalities and be adopted into forever homes. Sara, the Petite Primadonna, Takia, the no-nonsense gal, Darst, the wonderful patient patient, and Neeko, big bold boy were the front-runners for the inaugural stay at Christiansburg PetSmart. A handful of volunteers showed for training. Just think: If the 80 people who have signed up actually went and helped, NO ONE would have to do it more than once a month. Have you so little time to spare?? Imagine - only one or two hours a month and you can be filled with joy and satisfaction that a shelter cat got adopted instead of the horrible alternative! We couldn't do it without you and your commitment to LIFE!

RESCUE WAGGIN - NEW YORK BOUND

This morning, 21 Pulaski Shelter dogs were transported to Lollypop Farm in NY on the Petsmart Rescue Waggin. A range of little dogs, big dogs, and 1 mom and her 9 pups! Jane, Barb, and Rebecca have loading down to a science. 21 dogs in 1 hour! WOW.

It's hard to believe that we still have 60 dogs at the shelter or in foster care that need homes! There are 12 – 6-7 week old puppies… along with some really sweet adult dogs that often get overlooked because of the puppies. If you are interested in adopting a dog, the time is right ! At the shelter right now are these two 18 month old German Shorthair Pointer's who are neutered and just waiting for the right home. They're still puppies at heart!Oreo and Snow would love a big yard or someone to jog with.

SAVING LIVES - RESCUE WAGGIN - CLEVELAND BOUND

The life-saving PetsMart Rescue Waggin rolled into the Pulaski County Animal Shelter and Humane Education Center Tuesday morning at 5 a.m. to pick up homeless dogs. Volunteers loaded an assortment of 19 dogs into the state-of-the-art animal transport van, headed for Cleveland Animal Protection League shelter, where they will quickly find homes. The Pulaski County Humane Society has proudly participated in the Rescue Waggin program for 1 year and it has drastically helped reduce euthanasia rates. We are one of the few shelters in the state of Virginia certified to participate in this East Coast program.

It takes a village to bring something like this to fruition and we thank all our dedicated volunteers and fosters who made it possible to save so many lives. A LOVE UNREQUITED

Long time residents Tex and CJ performed their last Electric Slide show for the Condo residents before dancing off to their new gig this week. Best wishes to the boys and we hope you find lots of mice eager to learn some new moves!

Finally recovered from her double surgery, Basha was so excited about having a face-to-face meeting with Neeko, the Cutie of Condo Pulaski. But alas, her affections were not returned. Spurned by the one she thought would be her BFF, Basha is now hanging with her Gurlfrenz Gracie and Fancy. Gracie loves the new arrangement. "They neglected to install a mirror so that I could continuously gaze upon my beauteous self," complained Gracie. "But having Fancy in here is like looking at my spectacularness all the time. Well, except we all know I am (delicate cough) a bit more dazzling."

"mmrmph, munch snorfle, crunch," replied Fancy, working her way through a mound of treats.

Neeko, in the meantime, is determinedly pursuing Midnight. He was spotted inviting her to share a drink with him at posh Under The Steps Fountain Bar.

Silver and Misty have become fast friends and even took out a lease on the penthouse unit of Condo Rolls. They share and swap catnip toys and bad jokes into the long hours of the morning.

In a surprise development, Ariel and Prince seem to be developing a friendship. "It's only fitting," chirped Ariel, "that this Princess should have a Prince." The wags are eagerly watching and waiting. Will anything come of this? Can two avowed loners find common ground? or are they destined to a life of solitary rule?

Neeko, in the meantime, is ardently after Missy. He was spotted inviting her to share some treats with him at trendy Top of the Condo Snack Bar.

With the defection of Prince, Tigger has taken over the number one position in the Condo Curmudgeons Club. He and Ruben remain adamant in their position that no household is complete without a cat, and that with only one cat it is complete.

Oreo and Beauty, however, argued that it takes two to make a home. Then they curled up together in a ray of sunshine and took a nap.

Neeko, in the meantime, was last seen following Pearl into cozy Condo Lane Tunnel.

LONG LIVE THE QUEEN!

The Queen of the Condo, Miss Lady herself, abdicated this week. "Reigning over all these cats and all these volunteers was fun," she said, "but I am now ready to be properly served and honored as befits my station." After a lengthy interview spanning two days, Queen Lady deemed Ms Patten worthy of the position of Prime Minister to the Queen.

Although it is always exciting when a resident of Condo Pulaski finds a home, it's a particularly big thrill when one of the long term residents finds that someone special. The residents celebrated with a tasty Tuna Fest until the wee hours of the morning.

RESCUE WAGGIN - CLEVELAND BOUND

Rebecca, Barb, Bill, and Jane all arrived at the shelter yesterday at 5am to load 19 dogs headed for Cleveland on the PetSmart Rescue Waggin.

It took a gang of 7 to load all the babies. All was quiet when the van pulled out at 6:40am. It was snowing in Cleveland and the Democratic debate happened a few miles from the Cleveland Animal Protection League shelter.

LOS ANGELES - Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on Tuesday signed one of the nation's toughest laws on pet sterilization, requiring most dogs and cats to be spayed or neutered by the time they are 4 months old.
The ordinance is aimed at reducing and eventually eliminating the thousands of euthanizations conducted in Los Angeles' animal shelters every year.
"We will, sooner rather than later, become a no-kill city and this is the greatest step in that direction," Councilman Tony Cardenas said as he held a kitten at a City Hall news conference.
The ordinance does exempt some animals, including those that have competed in shows or sporting competitions, guide dogs, animals used by police agencies and those belonging to professional breeders.
The average pet owner, however, must have their dog or cat spayed or neutered by the time it reaches 4 months of age (as late as 6 months with a letter from a veterinarian).
First-time offenders will receive information on subsidized sterilization services and be given an additional 60 days. If they still fail to comply they could be fined $100 and ordered to serve eight hours of community service. A subsequent offense could result in a $500 fine or 40 hours of community service.
Many states require animals adopted from shelters to be sterilized, and New York City requires the same for animals bought from pet shops, but restrictions such as Los Angeles' are rare. A 2006 Rhode Island law requires most cats to be sterilized.
A measure similar to Los Angeles' passed the California Assembly last year but did not gain state Senate support.
Los Angeles animal shelters took in 50,000 cats and dogs last year and euthanized approximately 15,000 at a cost of $2 million, according to city officials.
Bob Barker, the retired game-show host who famously ended every "Price is Right" show with a call for sterilizing pets, pushed for the law's adoption and was among those at Tuesday's news conference.
"The next time that you hear me say, 'Help control the pet population, have your pet spayed or neutered,' I can add, 'It's the law in Los Angeles,'" a jubilant Barker said.

Don't procrastinate while the felines procreate.

The ideal time to fix a cat is when they start getting the lanky "teenager legs" between kitten and adulthood but some vets early fix as early as 8 weeks of age. There are health benefits to fixing a female cat prior to her first heat (which is typically at 6 months of age - but can happen even earlier). A female cat in heat will yowl and a male cat will seek out the females, spraying and marking. A female cat can get pregnant every 9 weeks and even while nursing a litter. Cats start mating the second the weather starts to be the least bit warm, which means RIGHT NOW. Our shelter is full 12 months of the year, 24X7 with cats - we don't need more births - ever - and there are never enough homes for all of them.

Valentine Books Delivered

Pulaski County Humane Society Board members and volunteers delivered over 150 "award winning" animal themed books to every library in the Pulaski County School system on Valentine's Day (11 libraries total).

This is the 3rd year that the humane society has purchased and delivered humane books.

BYE BYE BIRDIE!

Cheesy grins and sparkling eyes were the order of the day at Condo Pulaski this week. All were celebrating the adoption of Birdie with a week-long Cosmic Catnip Party! Even the oldsters were not immune. Ariel was bouncing around like a kitten on pogo sticks, grappling and hugging her catnip-filled toy. Prissy tossed flakes into the air like confetti, and Lady daintily nibbled at the copious amounts strewn in her unit.

In the meantime, in response to the girls forming the Big Beautiful Kitties Klub, Tex and his friends started their own. “We are the Beastie Boys Boxing Bunch!” cried CJ, and he took a flying leap onto Tex’s belly. Tails were spinning and whiskers flying when Janet joined the fray, and the three were last seen rolling up the staircase into Condo Lane Tunnel.

Beauty and Oreo continue to bond, even using each other as pillows the other day. Cries of “You first” “No, YOU first” were heard as the two oh-so-politely took turns at supper. Fancy merely rolled her eyes and barreled past the both of them, hooting “You first after MEEEEE HAHAHAHAHA!”

Several residents besides Birdie have moved out, and new faces have moved in, resulting in some changes. The Three Divas Gracie, Bear and Dreamsicle have finally moved in together. “This is Fab. A wonderful view and maid service, just what we deserve,” said Gracie. Basha is recovering very well from her double surgery and hopes to meet up with cutie Neeko soon. Misty finally got to meet everyone, as did Missy. “I’m still a little nervous,” said Missy. “I’ve never been in a crowd before. But, the food’s not bad, and Midnight has been showing me around, so it’s getting better.” Prince and JD remain the resident curmudgeons, but rumors of late night frat parties are chipping away at this façade.

January is Unchain a Dog Month!

This one almost got past me, so here's some info to get everyone started on helping a chained dog!

The Mutts comic above is one of my favorites--no matter how many times I read it, I still get a little misty-eyed. It's a very simple portrayal of how little it takes to make a best friend for life. Chaining/tethering/penning or whatever you call it is the most prevalent form of neglect. And to make matters worse, it is not even viewed as neglect and is commonly accepted (i.e.--not against the law!). Do I want to chain the owners outside in severe weather for days on end without food, water, shelter, or contact with another living being? Yes I do. More than anything in the world. Unfortunately, that would be against the law. So, we must instead attempt to educate the owners and intervene on the dogs' behalf.

Information is readily available all over the internet. HSUS, PETA, Unchain Your Dogs, and Dogs Deserve Better provide numerous resources, printable materials, and tips for intervening on a dog's behalf. I especially like the Dogs Deserve Better mini-billboard yard sign.

To the left is Ranger, one of our local chained, neglected dog success stories. You may have seen him featured in the blog in the past. When he came to the shelter, he was severly emaciated and malnourished to the point that his hair was falling out. He seemed barely able to walk and had skin infections and a multitude of intestinal parasites. To the right is Ranger today, after being spoiled by everyone at the shelter and then being adopted into a great home where he is treated like a member of the family. Ranger is a very resilient dog, as many dogs in his situation go insane from isolation.

Please resolve to make a difference in the life of a chained dog this year!

An Animal Handling BUSY WEEK

Over the last 2 days, over 70 animals were either sterilized or sent to rescue - whew. This HAS to be a record!

Many volunteers helped getting all these animals ready. I THANK EACH OF YOU FOR DOING SUCH GREAT WORK. It's amazing to me how many hands are required to pull all this off.

The rescue waggin rolled into town early last morning at 5 am. Fifty animals were altered or tested for FELV/FIV or Heartworms and seventeen dogs were transported on the waggin to Lollypop Farm in New York.

YES - I went to rescue today!

Again, I would like to thank each of you that played a part in making these programs work. It is a lot of work but so rewarding!

Make a New Year's Resolution to help animals!

My HSUS 2008 Pet Lover's Calendar starts the year with some very good advice--create a Pet Disaster Kit and a special 1st Aid Kit for your pets. These 2 items go hand-in-hand, and can be stored together. I already have a huge 1st aid kit, but despite the time I spent in New Orleans rescuing animals from a disaster and the numerous disaster trainings I have attended, I have no disaster kit (a problem I plan to rectify toot-sweet)! Take the quiz to see if you are prepared!

Creating your pet disaster kit requires some up front spending and a little storage space. Collapsible crates are recommended for easy storage and transport in a disaster. You'll also need water and food for at least 5 days, your pets' medical records (I keep them in the 1st aid kit), any medicine your pet takes on a regular basis, ID tags, leash, small litter box and litter, current photos and description, and a big tote to put all this stuff in. Toys, blankets, beds, etc., can also be added, and would make your pet feel more at home.

Don't think you'll ever be affected by a disaster? What if your house catches fire? Or consider how close you live to the railroad tracks, the interstate, or any road that a truck can drive on, and you have the potential to be evacuated due to a chemical spill. Depending on the type of chemicals, you and your pets could be away from home for several days. HSUS Disaster Center has a ton of online information for pets, livestock, and horses--information that could save your animals' lives! More information is available from PETA and the ASPCA.

A 1st aid kit for your pet is a necessity in a disaster and for every day use. HSUS has lists of recommended items for your dog or cat. Number one on both lists is a good first aid handbook. I personally have The First Aid Companion for Dogs and Cats, by Amy Shojai, which includes a list of essentials for your 1st aid kit and a list of human medications that can be used for your pets (always consult your veterinarian first). The Red Cross offers 2 first aid books, one for dogs and one for cats. They also offer Pet 1st Aid courses at select chapters; the Roanoke Chapter is one of them. They do not have a class scheduled for 2008 yet, but they will call me when they do. If you are interested in attending this class, please let me know! They also mentioned the possibility that the Radford Chapter could offer the class, but I believe Bobby has already checked on this for us, and the cost for them to purchase the canine CPR mannequins is prohibitive.

As always, prevention is the best medicine, so check out information on how to protect your pets from common household dangers from HSUS and PETA (menu on right). ASPCA also has a huge list of pet care tips.

As for my own resolutions, I'm not sure what else I can do. I already save over 100 animals per year by simply not eating them. I don't use products that have been tested on animals (lists of companies that do/don't test on animals available here). I don't wear shoes or clothing made from animals (more info here). I don't attend circuses, rodeos, zoos, or any other event or venue that uses animals for entertainment (yep, more info). I spend as much time as I can spare at the shelter. I spoil the heck out of my 2 dogs and 4 cats. I call local animal control offices and police departments with complaints of cruelty to animals every time I see it. I annoy every human being I meet with spay/neuter information. I'll just resolve to keep doing all that!

Luckily, everything is clearing up nicely and now I'm ready to find a loving, peaceful home. Condo Updates

Just some quick notes to keep everyone up-to-date on the ever-changing shelter news!

A look at our adoptables page is very inspiring, to say the least! Scroll down to see the many cats that have been adopted or have gone to rescue this month. In the last several days, Bones, Spookums, and Streak were also adopted, and Lucky went to rescue. Pixie also went to rescue; she was the office cat in the bottom cage and was FIV+.

I have been covering Condo Pulaski this week while Judith was taking some much deserved (and needed, I'm sure!) vacation time. The cats miss Judith very much; I've seen the way they roll their eyes when I show up! Before heading off into the great beyond, Judith transported 9 cats (including Lucky and Pixie) to Rikki's Refuge! Rikki's has helped us save 53 lives this year!

Dreamsicle was spayed this week and is resting comfortably in Condo Pulaski, apartment 1. Three kittens were surrendered to the shelter this week and were transferred to PCHS. Two girls and a boy named Janet, Chrissy, and Jack--from Three's Company! Thanks, Ashley, for the excellent names! They have been wormed, vaccinated, and are living comfortably in the bottom office cage. Unfortunately for them, their upstairs neighbor is the 4th tenor, Roman. He takes his singing career very seriously and practices almost constantly!

My friend and new PCHS volunteer, Ashley, came in on Thursday and was a huge help! She jumped right in and helped me scrub and bleach the office cage and litter boxes from recently vacated cages. Surprisingly, she said I was not difficult to work with.

Lovin', Huggin', Brushin'!

Calling all cat lovers! We have several long-haired condo kitties at the moment who need frequent brushing. If you like cats and have 30 minutes or so to spare, Prissy, Tabitha, Lady, and Browny would very much like to meet you! All volunteers must register with our office and receive proper handling instructions first; we are open M-F 1-5, Sat 10-2.

Rescue Waggin' testing help needed!

This Sat and Sunday, Dec 29 and 30, 2-5pm Julie and Rebecca will be SAFER testing for the next Rescue Waggin' load. There are many dogs that need to be tested--the more hands they have to help, the more they can get on the Waggin'.

SAFER testing is very time and energy consuming for the testers (and at times, very entertaining for the observers!), so if you can help, please come to the shelter at some point during that timeframe -- either or both days! The shelter will be closed but they will be back in the garage area. They will need 1 person to run the camera and 2-4 to run the dogs.

A NEW ROMANCE FOR BIRDIE?

Last month, the Princess Pair Birdie and Ariel rocked Condo Pulaski when they called it quits. Allegations of snoring, cat fights and hogging the bed flew like fur in a windstorm. Ariel took her settlement and now resides in Manse du Ed Room. “Being alone has given me time to reflect,” she said. “I feel calmer, more relaxed. My beautiful fur is looking better than ever, too.” Ariel is hoping that things will continue to improve, and she will be able to finally share her insights with a human family.

In the meantime, Birdie has become interested in a younger man. This morning she was caught traipsing up and down the Tower Post, trilling and cooing to Trevor. Trevor couldn’t get enough of the coquettish lady, following her everywhere and even managing to give her a hug or two. Will she have him move in to her double suite? Neither is saying, but sources speculate it could happen within the next month.

Tex and CJ have moved from their mid-rise triple suite at the swanky Condo Pulaski into a larger, lower level flat at the Condo Rolls. Their new roommate, Daytona, tired of the constant Electric Slide practices, has introduced the pair to opera. Now the three bachelors have their eyes on upcoming tryouts for The Mikado. The trio promises to be an eye-catching smash with their black silky tuxes and suit!

Lucky is contemplating a move to the country. Seems that city life is just too much stress for the delicate girl, and she feels a turn at farm life would be good for her soul. We wish her many mice and lots of sunshine as she enjoys her new hay-filled home.

Wonderful mews all around – both Pearl and Taylor have found forever homes! Pearl is enjoying ruling the roost in her new family, and Taylor is having fun with his new buddy.

New residents have been moving in all week - when the dust settles from all the remodeling and rearranging, we'll be back with all the updates!

We're having a puppy!!!!!

This is appropriate for the number of people who keep putting their dogs up for adoption when they find out they are going to have kids...

After two long years of being on a waiting list for an agility dog, we have been notified by the breeder that, at long last, our number has come up and ... WE ARE HAVING A PUPPY!!! Therefore, we must get rid of our children IMMEDIATELY because we just know how time consuming our new little puppy is going to be and it just wouldn't be fair to the children.

Since our little puppy will be arriving on Monday we MUST place the children into rescue this weekend! The kids are described as:

One male - His name is Tommy, Caucasian (English/Irish mix), light blonde hair, blue eyes. Four years old. Excellent disposition. He doesn't bite. Temperament tested. Does have problems with pee ing directly in the toilet. Has had chicken Pox and is current on all shots. Tonsils have already been removed. Tommy eats everything, is very clean, house trained & gets along well with others. Does not run with scissors and with a little training he should be able to read soon.

One female - Her name is Lexie, Caucasian (English/Irish mix), strawberry blonde hair, green eyes quite freckled. Two years old. Can be surly at times. Non-biter, thumb sucker. Has been temperament tested but needs a little attitude adjusting occasionally. She is current on all shots, tonsils out, and is very healthy & can be affectionate. Gets along well with other little girls & little boys but does not like to share her toys and therefore would do best in a one child household. She is a very quick learner and is currently working on her house training-shouldn' t take long at all.

We really do LOVE our children so much and want to do what's right for them; that is why we contacted a rescue group. But we simply can no longer keep them. Also, we are afraid that they may hurt our new puppy.

I hope you understand that ours is a UNIQUE situation and we have a real emergency here!!! They MUST be placed into your rescue by Sunday night at the latest or we will be forced to drop them off at the orphanage or along some dark, country road. Our priority now has to be our new puppy.

Weekend Update

Hi everyone! Just a quick update about this weekend's events. It's late and I'm tired, so I apologize to everyone who is looking forward to more of my sardonic wit.

Only one adoption this weekend that I know of--Spike, one of the cattle dog/catahoula puppies.

A nice couple came in looking for a "least likely to be adopted" dog. I think they are trying to choose between Blue and Russell.

I covered the condo on Saturday, while Keely covered the office. Several NRCC SGA students come to leave presents under the tree and help out for a few hours. Jennie and Mike were also there, so some of the students helped them walk dogs, while 2 others helped me in the condo. There were so many folks there, I wasn't able to get all their names. One of the young ladies gave me an update about Martha/Belle--the library cat at the Dublin Library (her mother works there). Apparently, she has learned to use the water fountain! She used to drink water with her paw while she was in the condo.

My friends and trusted dogsitters, Ashley and Logan, also came in to volunteer. They put down blankets for all the dogs and gave baths to the pile of kittens (they have been playing in the litter box too much!) that were being fostered by Marlena. Marlena is one of our "behind the scenes" volunteers for those of you who don't know her. At any given time, she is usually bottle-feeding an orphaned litter of kittens; the kitties to the left are the most recent. She always does a wonderful job with the kittens--the newest batch are very healthy, playful, and snuggly! Thanks Marlena! We wish you a speedy recovery from your recent cataract surgery!

Update December 14, 2007 late afternoon: A Blair County, Pennsylvania jury has found Tammy Grimes guilty of theft and receiving stolen property. Sentencing is set for February 23, 2008.

BACKGROUND:
Tammy Grimes, founder of Dogs Deserve Better, was arrested September 11,
2006 for helping a dying chained dog named Doogie who could not stand in
East Freedom, Pennsylvania. Read about the case with photo and video

The judge instructed the jury they must find Tammy guilty if she "ever" intended to deprive the Arnolds of their property, Doogie, the dog. Ever? The judge also refused to allow the jury to consider the defense of justification. The judge really forced the verdict with these instructions. It didn't help that the prosecutor repeated throughout his closing argument that anarchy would ensue if the laws weren't enforced.

What about the animal cruelty laws? Shouldn't they be enforced too?

One courtroom observer noted, "Tammy should wear this conviction like a badge of honor. She did the right thing for the dog and that's what should have mattered here."

Outgoing Board Accomplishments

I would like to take this time to thank the outgoing Board of Pulaski County Humane Society for the care and dedication for which they have shown on behalf of animal welfare in our community.

The outgoing board has been instrumental

· Successfully approached Pulaski County Officials, demonstrating a need for a hired county
employee to assist with cleaning procedures in the shelter.

· Approved funds for all dogs coming into the shelter to be vaccinated thus reducing the
number of illnesses and disease suffered by animals.

· Produced a very much delayed newsletter which helped generate funds.

· Sent out a membership letter which has also generated funds as well as renewal of
memberships.

· Held its first ever reduced rate rabies clinic and adoptathon.

· Held a spring fundraising event which netted over $5,000.

· received an invitational grant from Pet Smart for a new computer and printer/copier/fax
in one.

· Brought the cat condo into compliance with state vet regulations.

· Raised funds to have severely injured animals treated.

· Worked to have Rikki’s Refuge recognized as a rescue for cats.

· Approved funding for a condo cleaner.

· Opened an in house Spay Clinic.

· Achieved certification as a source shelter for participation in the Pet Smart Rescue
Waggin Program which greatly reduced euthanasia rates of dogs at the shelter.

Office update

I want to Thank Everyone who has been coming in to help with the condo and office. Vet checks are scheduled for tomorrow at 3pm. There are 11 dogs going on the waggin Dec 11th. However the waggin will not be coming at 5am our normal time, as they are making a stop before getting to the shelter.

Chewey one of Sadie's pups was adopted today to a great home.

Ms. Big Stuff will go to her new home Saturday.

Sassy was adopted today.

Billie Jean aka Bailey came in Dec 4th for her spay and it was learned she was already spayed so she got her nails trimmed and rabies vaccine. She looked wonderful and very happy and healthy. The family that adopted her stated she is doing great with the other pets which they also adopted from PCHS. She plays with Noodles and the Austrailian Shepard that they adopted from PCHS earlier this year. They said at first she did not know how to play but she is learning. She was already housebroken. They love her.

Tutor was also checked recieved rabies vaccine and deemed to be already spayed by the vet.

There were 3 no shows for the Assisi Van. And the little nerological puppy was referred to his own vet for surgery. So we only had 11 dogs actually get spayed/neutered.

Bobby our animal control officer has been busy decorating the shelter and it looks really good.

We are getting quite a response from the newsletter and the membership letter that was sent out.

Tomorrow the lady who is making all the animal request ornaments will be dropping those off. Folks have already been stopping by to see what the animals need.

One of the new volunteers has been busy brushing and bathing all the dogs. The dogs look and smell great.

Sheba has an injured paw so we are treating it and keeping it clean.

Three Condo Cats went to Siamese Rescue and Rex the border collie also went to Rescue last Saturday.

We are hoping to be able to start updating the website and petfinder site as our pets need to get some exposure to the public. Many are no longer here and we have a number of new pets that have been brought in.

Marlene recenty had eye surgery. I spoke to her husband and she is doing well. She is still fostering the kittens and hopes they will start eating kitten food so she can bring them back and they can find homes.

Pinky is also in foster care and getting the attention needed to help her hair grow back.

Dec. 20th we will be having a Christmas open house from 6-8pm. Santa will be on hand and you can get your picture taken with your favorite person, pet or child. Animal Control will be available to adopt animals out that evening. Refreshments will be available.

Please remember the pets at the shelter this holiday season. We need dog biscuits,canned cat food, paper towels, large litter pan liners.

Dog survives euthanasia attempt and 4 day stay in freezer

RUSHVILLE, Ind. -- Rushville suspended its animal shelter's director over allegations that five dogs have survived euthanasia attempts there since August, including a dog that lived despite spending several days in a freezer.

Weekend Activities

Saturday was a very busy day at the shelter. Bobby and Sandy were doing Christmas decorations and making the shelter look wonderful. Special thanks to Sandy for doing our Christmas tree!! Jen and Mike were in to walk dogs and give attention to all. Anita was there way early to clean the condo and Laura and David working the office. Jennifer Smart came by to pick up the siamese trio for rescue. She took Cowboy, Alexa, and Kyle. Lots of folks were busy adopting dogs and Jill, Millie, and Chewey went to wonderful homes with families. Thanks to Rita for cleaning the condo on Sunday, too. All's well in condo land!!

Justin gets a Happy Home!!!

Today at the shelter, Amadeus was adopted by a wonderful family who was recommended by Dr. Vaughan. Jane Bell took Pinky, our recovering shephard, home to visit and get some TLC while he awaits the Rescue Waggin. Rex, the Border Collie, was getting ready for transport tomorrow to rescue.

Jen and Mike were busy making Christmas decorations for the kennels in addition to walking the dogs. Thanks Guys!! Animal Control was decorating the place and making it look beautiful. Anita was working the office and I was getting ready for the new Rescue Waggin. Several folks were in looking at dogs, too. Cowboy, Alexa and Kyle were lounging in the condo, spending their last day before going to Siamese Rescue.

We got pictures back from Justin!! Thanks to all the volunteers and doners who helped so graciously for this wonderful dog. He was a model Rescue Waggin Rider and after some additional vet care for dental and neutering at his destination shelter is shown with his new adoptive family on the way to his forever home. The Colvins were very glad to add Justin to their family and he seems very happy with them.

Thanksgiving Greetings from the Dogs!

Well we had a great day today - our kennels got a good scrubbing this morning. Jane came by and gave Pinky a spa treatment - she is really starting to look great! Her hair is coming back and her ear infections are almost gone. Jane also went through and gave the puppies some nice comfy blankies in their beds. Some lady came through before she left and gave us all some yummy basted bone treats - thanks to whoever donated them! Then the lady came back tonight and we had our own Thanksgiving Dinner - stuffing, macaroni salad, rolls and green beans. Yum!
Oh, and the cats did alright, too - some got to spend the WHOLE DAY out and the rest had some yummy treats as well.
Brenda and her Elves came by and started on the brick walkway for the memorial garden. It looks beautiful already. Can't wait to see the finished walk! And Brenda, the flowers look great, too - even if the deer are using them for their gourmet salads.

We have so much to be thankful for. We have a beautiful shelter to house our animals, we have dedicated volunteers who donate time and energy to help, be it one hour or hundreds, in or out of the shelter and behind the scenes and we have the funds to carry out programs that help or save animals every day. Special thanks today to Judith and the folks who are taking time out of their day to care for our animals today. I hope that everyone has a wonderful, restful day.

Monday was vet check day!

I wanted to Thank Jane, Bill, Jen and Susan for helping with the vet checks yesterday. It was great having a man available to walk the bigger dogs. There was a little confusion about which puppy was which but we finally figured it out.

I hope Keely was able to get through all the paperwork and have a quiet day with no interruptions. I appreciate that she made it in altho her baby sitter was ill and she had to make new arrangements.

Rita I know you had plans to help us but we ended up with plenty of help and it sounds like you ended up being plenty busy already. I hope you aced your test.

Kojak , Pinky, Blue will not be riding the waggin this go around. So we can continue to work with getting them looking better for next waggin or adopted out. Pinky's second skin scraping came back neg. as well.

We have some beautiul siamese cats in the office if know anyone that would love to adopt one.
We have 3 males, Kyle, ( in condo) Quincy, Cowboy and the beautiful Alexia in office.

Friday Volunteers

We had a large group from VT come in today and helped walk dogs and 3 volunteers were in the condo grooming the cats. They filled the water bowls and exercised the puppies. I hope they all enjoyed themselves. I know the dogs really enjoyed getting out to explore among other things. Justin was loving it and did not want to go back in his cage. Even some of the puppies were happy as larks with their ears flopping in the wind running to their hearts content. It was good exercise for all. And of course the cats always love getting attention.

Rebecca, Jen and another volunteer were safer testing the dogs. Hope they all passed. I was so busy I did not get a chance to find out.

Nicole came in and helped me out. She was also giving tours to potential adopters. And showed some of Sadies puppies. I believe we have applications on all Sadies pups but one. The little one with nuerological problems even has a person who wants to adopt him.

Popeye the big pit got adopted today Hurrah! He found a good home. Sapphire from our cat condo was actually adopted the other day. Bye Sapphire.

Pinky did not get his bath today as I promised Judith so if any body gets a chance to please give him a medicated bath please do. He has been moved to the kennel that Popeye was in.

In cage 12 in back cat holding area we have some tiny little kittens. I noticed they were chewing on the dry kitten chow maybe some one can make sure to add warm water to it making it easier to eat. They are darling just so young. I gave the inmate a couple of the very last cans of canned cat food we had for these small babies.

We have finished off all the dog biscuits now.

On a much more sober note. Lady aka Ladybug the sher-pei that was adopted out by AC was found to have ovarian cancer. I am sad to report that lady was humanely euthanzied today. There was no way to tell just how advanced the cancer was or how much it had spread. The owner concerned about Lady's quality of life did not want to see her suffer. Please know that Lady was a gentle and sweet spirited dog.

Let us all be thankful for the good health our pets are enjoying.

Another Busy day! Wow there is so much to to do at the shelter. Thank Goodness Billy was there and Jennifer showed up so it was all of us working.

In case you don't know we are down to one inmate. The shelter is jammed packed with animals.

So there is a lot of feeding and kennels and cages to clean. The inmate told me he has not had a chance to clean the other areas of the shelter. So Billy washed all the litter pans, I scrubbed up all the bowls. I cleaned the sallie port cages, and we all cleaned up the sallie port removing trash and putting things away. I knew the volunteers were coming in later to safer test and wanted them to have a clean area to work in. Billy and Jennifer scrubbed the sallie port floor, rinsed and squeeged it dry.

Jennifer attacked the bathroom refilling supplies, and emptying trash. I mopped the education room. Jennifer and I next looked in on the puppies refilling water bowls and giving some crying pups a kong with peanut butter.

Jennifer and I checked all the dog kennels and got some messy ones cleaned up and put down fresh linen for dogs and extra food for the pups.

Billy scrubbed the grooming room floor and attacked the laundry getting everything washed.

Lynn must have come in and dropped off the litter so Billy got that put in condo.

Joanne was in running the auto clave getting things ready for spay clinic next week.

Judith had the condo looking great and all the cats were happy and doing well today. She was there till pass 1 today and made sure all the meds given. Judith surely does deserve recognition for all her hard work.

I understand the order Judith put in for meds came in so I believe we are ready for Vet checks Monday.

Billy and I attempted to make some room in the office it was looking cluttered. I was getting that closed in feeling.

I tried to make a print out for Joanne but the printer would not print so hopefully the grant Laura submitted will be approved for the new office computer and printer. I had to leave at 4pm so I could get the newsletters out and I did manage to get them in the mail.

The phone did not ring once from 1p till 4pm that was strange but I was glad as we were all busy working off that halloween candy we had eaten.

The Iam's adoption packages came in and Billy and I filled a basket with some for those who need them when they adopt the aniamls. Please make sure new owners get them they have vaccines info and how to care for pet info plus sample of food. The rest of the box is on top of the book case.

I just want to say thanks to everyone who was in today. If you have chance to stop by shelter tomorrow I will have 11 VT students in at 1pm till about 4pm and I will be working to assign them chores.

I also have an interview with Amanda Sparks who wants to tell VT students about the volunteer opportunies available at our shelter.

Pinky is getting a bath tomorrow. I have kittens in back that need to be fed with bottles.

The shelter is out of paper towels and wet canned cat food and we need dog biscuits. If you do any grocery shopping this weekend maybe you can help us out and drop them by the shelter.

Oh! Lucy went to her foster home. I know the lady came in and wanted to know how big a crate to get for Lucy. She was so excited about taking her home. She may very well adopt her.

The people that have applied for Sadie's puppies have also been stopping by to play with the puppy of their choice they can' t take them home yet but it won't be long now. I think momma is getting tired of them nursing she was kinda snapping at them the other day.

Assisi Van

To update everyone we had 14 dogs that were spayed/neutered on the van today there were also 14 cats that got spayed/neutered. Of those 14, two were cats that were new to the condo and the female siamese cat in the office. Due to time constraints Cowboy and Quincy the two other siamese cats in office did not get done and will have to be booked on the next available spay clinic date.

Abby one of the condo cats that was adopted out yesterday was spayed today. Amadeous the large orabge cat in the lobby was already neutered so he got his rabies vaccine now he is ready to be adopted out now.

One gentleman had a huge dog that weighted 84 lbs and was not able to be done due to the dogs weight and size. So I arranged the surgery with is vet and PCHS will reimburse him the money he paid to have it done on the van since it was a booking error. There is a weight restriction of 80 lbs on the van.

It was a very busy day. Cherish the pitbull that was so badly infested with fleas when it first arrived was adopted today. Bailey the dog who had the fatty tumor removed was reported to me adopted this weekend. Lucy who was scheduled to go to petsmart then found to be in heat is actually going to be fostered by a family that may end up adopting her.

Ms. Big Stuff has a bad ear infection so per Judith request I obtained an ointment antibiotic to treat that infection. Judith is trying to get the meds for Pinky who has a severe ear infection . I believe this is the dog in the back we are treating for hair loss. It seems the dog is responding to treatment as Judith reports it hair is coming back in.

Well if you have not been to visit the shelter lately you should. We have all sizes, breeds, colors, we have some beagle puppies, lab puppies and puppies in rescue row that are adorable.
We are filled to the brim with dogs and the the cat holding area, the cat quaratine room and the sallie port cages are filled with mutiple cats. Some are very tiny kittens.

There is an emergency rescue effort going on in Hillsville where there are over 1000 dogs that need medical care, adoptions and foster home. I was told most these dogs are lap sized dogs and I was told by the todays vet to contact almost any rescue group in the area for a specific breed as these groups will be seeking foster homes.

One of the dogs on the van today was a very small sweet yorkie brought in by Pound Pals in Radford. This little dog is looking for a good home and there will be many more small dogs very similar to him. If you would like to help with this effort please contact VA Paws, Pound Pals, or Julie Willams of Animals Control. They are looking for carriers and cages as there are over 1000 dogs that need to be removed anyone that can help transport and has a truck, van is very much needed.

We are again down to 1 inmate so if you have time during the day to help out at the shelter it would be very much appreciated.

Wednesday shelter update

Rescue Waggin had some problems getting to us yesterday. Seems the waggin broke down and then they had a new driver who got lost but they finally arrived at about 1:15pm. They already had some dogs on board. They were only able to take 9 of the 15 we had scheduled to go.

They did take GINGER, Chance, Vern, Staffey, Izzy, Amelia, Gilligan, Page, Rocky. Yeah!!!!

After they left we managed to clean all the cages in Rescue row and moved Blue, Lucy, Woody, Kojak, Macie into rescue row. Ruby is still in puppy cage room. My understanding is all these dogs have been transferred to PCHS. Bailey and Justin as well. We are taking applications on all these dogs. Except for Justin they are to adopted out for $85.00 and then booked for spays/neuters with local vets and if necessary on the Assisi or clinic. This will help us recover some of the expenses that we incurred for health checks, rabies and vaccines. Macie is already spayed. I will checkj but vet thought Bailey was already spayed as well.

The only dog in Rescue row that is not ours is Sarah and her puppies. The puppies can be adopted out in 3 weeks and applications are currently being accepted. There is one puppy which the vet says has a neurological problem. We are looking for a foster for that puppy should it not get adopted. We have had dogs with the same or similar problems in the shelter and with the proper care can live happy healthy lives.

We have a lady who wants to adopt Lucy she came with Laura the dark haired girl who does volunteer work. We are attempting to contact her to let her know Lucy is available. If you happen to know who the lady is please advise her.

Well Fiona got adopted as did Lady the shar-pei and Bently found a wonderful home with Barb.

We have 28 cats under our care. And we are working to get them fixed up to date vaccines, rabies and Fel/leu tested.

The new cage in the condo is great and I am glad to see we are able to save more cats. But they do all need homes.

We have some kittens in foster care with Marlena, Justin is with me and doing fine. He gets his stitches out friday and will be returning to Rescue Row. We will have to charge extra for his adoption to cover surgery and x-rays. If he does not get adopted he can go to next rescue.

The board voted to have surgery done on Robbie who had been shot 3 times and will lose a leg.
When he is released after surgery he will be coming to my home to recover. Unless some else is available to care for him.

We are currently taking applications for fostering homes. So if you know of anyone who stays at home, loves pets ad can share their home and nurse sick or injured pets please have them contact the office.

Kojak will still need to be treated so his hair will grow back and he needs brushing to get the last of the matted hair off.

Interview are being conducted for the cleaning position in the shelter. Hopefully we will have some one hired for that soon. In the meantime we only have 1 inmate and Julie has managed to get some extra inmates in later in the morning to also help.

The goats that were in the back have found homes so the exercise area is available again for the dogs to be able to get some exercise during the day.

If any committee member has planned events for future please email them to Linda ahead of time so we can get them in the events calendar.

Bill is heading the interview committee for the new LVT's and we are trying to work out a date to interview and meet them. One will be our regular LVT and the other will be a back up LVT.
We will have report at next board meeting.

Nov 6th is our next Assisi Van and if anyone is interested in helping please have them contact me. I would really appreciate any help and it is not hard training is available.

Treat trail is tonight you are welcome to come and help pass out candy to all the little ghouls and goblins from 4-7pm Becky and I are scheduled to be there.
